Breaking the Rules: The Printed Face of the European Avant Garde 1900–1937, edited by art historian Stephen Bury, covers the work, movements, and faces of the early 20th century avant garde and their common themes. The avant garde’s information and ideas were new and influential, which spread internationally with the help of printed work. Due to restrictions avant garde artists often encountered in terms of communication and exhibitions, they turned to publishing their own work and creating new genres in the form of printed material. Breaking the Rules includes 100 illustrations of printed avant garde work.

The front cover names art movements connected to the avant garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, Dadaism, Futurism, Surrealism, and Vorticism, and mentions avant garde figures like German designer Tschichold, French poet and playwright Apollinaire, Czech artist and writer Teige, and American visual artist Man Ray.
